What is Virechan?

Ayurvedic Therapeutic Purgation for Pitta Purification

Virechan is the second of the five classical Panchakarma therapies in Ayurveda. It involves medically supervised therapeutic purgation — the administration of specific herbal medicines that induce controlled bowel cleansing to eliminate accumulated Pitta, toxins (Ama), and vitiated doshas from the small intestine, liver, and blood.

Virechan is a 15-day programme comprising preparatory therapies (Purvakarma), the main treatment day, and a structured post-procedure recovery (Paschatkarma). It is performed exclusively by our Ayurvedic doctors and is the most effective treatment for all Pitta-related disorders — from skin diseases and liver conditions to inflammatory and metabolic disorders.

The Virechan Programme

1
Ayurvedic Consultation & Assessment

Our Ayurvedic doctor conducts a thorough evaluation of your health condition, Pitta imbalance, digestive strength, and overall fitness to confirm suitability for Virechan and design your personalised 15-day programme.

2
Pre-Therapy Procedure (Purvakarma)

i. Snehapan: For 3–6 days, the patient has to drink ghee on an empty stomach every morning. The dose will increase from 30 ml to 180 ml over these 6 days.

ii. Snehan & Swedan: Should be carried out after Snehapan, continuing till the day of Virechan.

3
Main Therapy — Virechan

Programme Duration: 15 days (including preparation and recovery)

Supervision: Performed exclusively by our Ayurvedic doctor

i. The patient needs to sit comfortably on a chair and is asked to take Ayurvedic medicine to induce loose motion.

ii. After every episode of loose motion, drink 1 glass of black resin water.

iii. During this treatment, the patient is asked to walk and rest their body throughout the procedure.

iv. Continue this process till a whitish or sticky discharge appears.

4
Post-Therapy — Sansarjan Kram

After Virechan, digestion is weak for a few days. So to increase the digestive power, the patient has to follow a special diet regimen, which is called Sansarjan Kram.

i. It includes food such as moong dal, rice, etc.

ii. Along with food, consume digestive powder provided by us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vaman (therapeutic emesis) eliminates excess Kapha through the upper route — the mouth — and is primarily for Kapha disorders like asthma. Virechan (therapeutic purgation) eliminates excess Pitta through the lower route — the bowels — and is primarily for Pitta disorders like skin diseases, liver conditions, and inflammatory disorders. Both are classical Panchakarma therapies performed by our doctors.
Yes — when performed by a qualified Ayurvedic doctor following the classical Panchakarma protocol. Virechan at Herbal Hills Center is performed exclusively by our doctors. A thorough health assessment is conducted before the programme begins to confirm suitability, and the doctor monitors the patient throughout the procedure.
Yes. Virechan is one of the most effective Ayurvedic treatments for chronic skin diseases including psoriasis, eczema, urticaria, and dermatitis. These conditions are rooted in Pitta and blood vitiation — and Virechan directly eliminates the excess Pitta and toxins from the blood and intestines, addressing the root cause rather than just the symptoms.
The complete Virechan Panchakarma programme is 15 days — including the preparatory phase (Purvakarma), the main treatment day, and post-procedure recovery (Sansarjan Kram). This structured timeline is essential to ensure safety, effectiveness, and lasting benefits.
Virechan is contraindicated for children, the elderly, pregnant women, people with severe debility, acute diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, or certain cardiac conditions. A comprehensive Ayurvedic consultation is mandatory before beginning the programme to confirm suitability and ensure the procedure is conducted safely.
