How Ayurvedic Therapies Are Planned
Ayurveda sees health as a balance of three doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — and of digestion (Agni) and the body’s channels (srotas). When that balance is disturbed, an Ayurvedic doctor uses a combination of therapies, herbal medicines, diet and daily routine to help restore it.
The Ayurvedic therapies we offer at Herbal Hills fall into a few broad groups: Panchakarma cleansing procedures, local oil-retention (Basti) therapies, dhara (stream) therapies, massage and sweating therapies, kizhi (herbal bolus) therapies, focused pain therapies and therapies for the eyes, ears, nose and hair. Below you will find every therapy we offer, grouped this way, with a link to its full page.
Each page explains what the therapy is, how a session works, who it suits and who should avoid it. Your doctor will always confirm the right choice for you, so the Ayurvedic therapies you receive here are never chosen off a menu.
Panchakarma
Panchakarma Therapies List: Cleansing Procedures
Panchakarma means “five actions”. These are the main cleansing procedures of Ayurveda, usually preceded by oil and steam preparation and always planned by a doctor.
Raktamokshana – Leech Therapy
Classical Raktamokshana using medicinal leeches, chosen by the doctor for selected skin and joint concerns.
Raktamokshana – Siravedh
Classical Raktamokshana by controlled venesection, performed by a doctor in selected cases.
Local Basti
Local Basti (Oil-Retention) Therapies
Among the most requested Ayurvedic therapies for joint and back stiffness. A ring of dough is placed on the body and filled with warm medicated oil, which is held over one area for a set time.
Hrudbasti
Warm medicated oil held over the chest, traditionally used for calm and chest-region comfort.
Dhara & Head
Dhara and Head Therapies
Dhara therapies pour a steady stream of warm oil, milk or buttermilk over the forehead or body; head therapies focus on the scalp and crown.
Massage & Swedana
Massage and Swedana Therapies
The Ayurvedic therapies most people start with. Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (herbal steam or heat) are the foundation of most Ayurvedic plans and the preparation for Panchakarma.
Kizhi
Kizhi (Herbal Bolus) Therapies
Kizhi therapies use warm cloth bundles filled with herbs, leaves, rice, powders or sand, pressed rhythmically over the body.
Pain Care
Focused Therapies for Local Pain
These focused Ayurvedic therapies for local pain work on one area at a time and are often added to a wider joint or back plan.
Eyes, Ears, Nose & Hair
Therapies for Eyes, Ears, Nose and Hair
Classical Shalakya therapies care for the senses and the head region, from nourishing eye therapies to herbal fumigation for the scalp.
Types of Ayurvedic Treatment Explained
People often ask what the types of Ayurvedic treatment are. In practice, Ayurvedic care combines several layers:
- Shodhana (cleansing) — Panchakarma procedures such as Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana, which aim to clear excess doshas.
- Shamana (pacifying) — herbal medicines, external oil therapies and diet that calm the doshas without strong cleansing.
- Bahya chikitsa (external therapies) — Abhyanga, dhara, kizhi, local Basti and lepam applications.
- Ahara and vihara (diet and lifestyle) — food, sleep, exercise and daily routine matched to your constitution.
- Rasayana (rejuvenation) — nourishing therapies and herbs used after cleansing to rebuild strength.
Most plans at Herbal Hills combine two or three of these. A person with knee stiffness, for example, might receive Abhyanga, Janu Basti and Podikizhi along with diet advice, while someone wanting a seasonal reset might follow a short Panchakarma course such as Detox Pro.
What Is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma means “five actions”. It is a classical Ayurvedic cleansing programme built around Vaman (therapeutic emesis), Virechan (therapeutic purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal therapy) and Raktamokshana (bloodletting).
A Panchakarma course has three stages. Purvakarma prepares the body with internal and external oleation and herbal steam. Pradhana karma is the main cleansing procedure chosen by your doctor. Paschat karma is the recovery period, with a graded diet and rest so digestion can return to full strength.
Not everyone needs all five actions. Your doctor selects the procedures that suit your constitution, the season and your health. You can read more about each one in the Panchakarma therapies list above, or explore our Signature Program for a doctor-led wellness plan.
Ayurvedic Therapies Through Mumbai’s Seasons
Classical Ayurveda links each season to a dosha and to the cleansing therapy that suits it best. Vaman is traditionally planned in spring, when Kapha rises; Basti in the monsoon, when Vata is aggravated by cool, damp weather; and Virechan in early autumn, when Pitta builds up after the rains.
In Mumbai, that means Basti courses are popular from June to September, cooling dharas such as Takradhara and Ksheerdhara are often chosen in the hot months, and Kapha-reducing therapies such as Udvartana and Nasya suit the cooler months. Your doctor uses the season as one guide among many when planning your therapies. If you are planning Ayurvedic therapies around travel, festivals or a family event, mention the dates at your consultation so the plan can be timed well.
How Long Does a Course of Ayurvedic Therapies Take?
A single session usually takes 30 to 90 minutes. Local therapies such as Janu Basti, Kati Basti or a kizhi are often given as a course of 3 to 7 sessions, while major Panchakarma procedures such as Vaman or Virechan are planned as programmes of about 15 days, including preparation and recovery. Classical Basti courses run for 8, 16 or 30 sessions. Your doctor explains the length of your plan at the first consultation and reviews it as you go. If you are short of time, ask about shorter Ayurvedic therapies that fit around work; many local therapies take under an hour and can be booked before or after office hours.
Your First Visit for Ayurvedic Therapies
Your first visit begins with a free consultation and Nadi Parikshan (pulse diagnosis). The doctor asks about your digestion, sleep, energy, stress, medical history and current medicines, and may check your tongue, skin and posture.
You then receive a written plan listing the therapies, the oils or herbs to be used, the number of sessions and any diet or routine changes. Most Ayurvedic therapies at Herbal Hills run between 30 and 90 minutes, and many plans are spread over one to three weeks.
All therapies are carried out in private rooms by trained therapists under the supervision of our Ayurvedic doctors, with fresh oils and clean linen for every session. This is the standard for all Ayurvedic therapies booked with us, whether a single Abhyanga or a full Panchakarma course.
Who Should Check With the Doctor First?
Before starting any Ayurvedic therapy, safety comes first. Some therapies are not suitable in certain situations. Please tell the doctor if you are pregnant, have a fever or acute infection, high or uncontrolled blood pressure, a heart condition, bleeding disorders, skin infections, recent surgery or are taking blood thinners. Therapies may be adjusted, postponed or replaced with gentler options.
Ayurvedic therapies support your wellbeing alongside — never instead of — the treatment prescribed by your physician. If you are under medical care, bring your reports and medicine list to the consultation.
Choosing Between Ayurvedic Therapies: Mumbai Patient Guide
With so many options, it can be hard to know where to start. A few simple pointers:
- For stress, poor sleep or mental fatigue, doctors often consider dhara therapies such as Shirodhara or head therapies like Shiro Abhyanga.
- For joint or back stiffness, local Basti therapies like Janu Basti and Kati Basti, kizhi therapies and Agnikarma are common choices.
- For digestion and a seasonal reset, Panchakarma procedures such as Niruha Basti, Anuvasana Basti and Virechan may be considered.
- For skin, weight and body tone, Udvartana and Sarvanga Abhyanga are often included.
These are starting points, not prescriptions. The best way to choose among Ayurvedic therapies is a consultation, where the doctor matches therapy to your constitution rather than to a symptom alone.
