What Is an Ayurvedic Treatment for Body Pain?

An Ayurvedic treatment for body pain uses warm medicated oils, herbal heat and gentle pressure to ease aches and stiffness across the muscles and joints. Instead of only numbing pain, Ayurveda looks at why it started: poor posture, long hours at a desk, overwork, cold weather, poor sleep or weak digestion can all aggravate Vata, the dosha that governs movement and the nerves.

When Vata is disturbed, Ayurveda describes the body as dry, tight and sensitive. Oil therapies (Snehana) nourish and soften the tissues, while heat therapies (Swedana) such as herbal bolus massage help relax stiffness and support circulation. Used together, they are the classical Ayurvedic approach to everyday body aches. Ayurveda is one of the recognised systems of medicine in India, overseen by the Ministry of AYUSH.

Vishrama brings these steps together in one visit. A full-body oil massage relaxes the whole body, a warm herbal bolus massage works on deeper stiffness, and a medicated oil pad (Pichu) is placed on the area that hurts most. Every session starts with a doctor consultation, so your Ayurvedic treatment for body pain is matched to your pain pattern and constitution.

Why Body Pain Happens, According to Ayurveda

Ayurveda links most long-standing body pain to a few common patterns:

  • Vata imbalance. Dryness, irregular routine, travel, stress and cold weather aggravate Vata, which can show up as stiffness, cracking joints and moving aches.
  • Ama (undigested residue). Weak digestion is linked to heaviness and dull, widespread aches, often worse in the morning.
  • Overuse and posture. Long hours sitting, lifting or standing strain the same muscles every day.
  • Poor sleep and stress. Tension held in the neck, shoulders and back makes pain feel worse.

A good Ayurvedic treatment for body pain starts by finding your pattern. Your doctor looks at which pattern fits you before deciding the oils and the focus of your session.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Body Pain vs a Regular Massage

A regular massage can feel relaxing, but an Ayurvedic treatment for body pain is planned differently:

  • Doctor-led. Every session at Herbal Hills starts with a free consultation, and your doctor decides the oils, pressure and focus areas.
  • Medicated oils and herbs. The oils and bolus powders are Ayurvedic preparations chosen for your pain pattern, not scented oils.
  • Oil plus heat. Oil therapy (Snehana) and herbal heat (Swedana) are combined, which is the classical Ayurvedic way to work on stiffness.
  • A plan, not a one-off. Posture, movement and diet advice come with each session, so the comfort lasts beyond the massage table.

Your Body Pain Treatment Session, Step by Step

Here is what a typical Vishrama session looks like at our Mumbai centres. The exact oils, pressure and focus areas are always set by your doctor.

1. Free doctor consultation

Your doctor asks where you feel pain, how long it has lasted, what makes it better or worse, your work and posture, sleep, digestion and any medicines you take. The doctor may read your pulse through Nadi Parikshan before planning your session.

2. Sarvanga Abhyanga – full-body oil massage

Warm medicated oil is massaged over the whole body in long, steady strokes. The pressure is adjusted to your comfort, and painful areas are handled gently.

3. Sarvanga Podikizhi – herbal bolus massage

Warm bundles of herbal powder are pressed and massaged over the body, with extra time on stiff areas such as the back, shoulders and legs.

4. Sthanik Pichu – medicated oil pad

A thick cotton pad soaked in warm medicated oil is placed on the main area of pain and left in place while you rest.

5. Steam, shower and rest (about 30 minutes)

The session ends with 15 minutes of steam and shower, then 15 minutes of rest, followed by simple advice on posture, movement and diet.

Is This For You?

Who Should Choose Vishrama?

Vishrama may be the right Ayurvedic treatment for body pain for you if:

🦴

You have aches in your back, neck, shoulders or legs most days

🌅

You feel stiff when you wake up or after sitting for long

💻

You work long hours at a desk, on your feet or with heavy lifting

😴

Body aches and tension make it hard to sleep well

🍃

You feel tired and heavy, with pain that moves around the body

👩‍⚕️

You want a natural, doctor-guided option alongside your regular care

When Vishrama May Not Be Suitable

Vishrama is generally well tolerated, but your doctor may postpone or adjust it if you have:

  • Fever or an acute illness on the day
  • A fresh injury, fracture, or a hot, red and swollen joint
  • Open wounds, rashes or an active skin infection
  • Pregnancy, or recent surgery — please tell your doctor first
  • Uncontrolled blood pressure, a heart condition or other serious illness

Please see a doctor urgently if back or neck pain comes with numbness, weakness in the legs or arms, loss of bladder or bowel control, unexplained weight loss, or follows a fall or accident. Vishrama is designed to be taken alongside your prescribed care, not in place of it.

What You’ll Feel

Benefits of the Vishrama Ayurvedic Treatment for Body Pain

Here is how Vishrama, as a complete Ayurvedic treatment for body pain, is designed to help:

🩹

Relief from Everyday Aches

Targeted Pichu therapy combined with full-body oil massage is designed to ease back pain, joint discomfort and chronic aches.

💪

Muscle & Joint Loosening

Warm herbal bolus therapy (Podikizhi) helps relax stiff muscles and joints, supporting natural range of motion and flexibility.

🧠

Calmer Mind

Medicated oils are traditionally used to settle aggravated Vata — the dosha Ayurveda links to pain and nerve sensitivity — helping you feel calm and at ease.

🩸

Improved Circulation

Abhyanga and Podikizhi together support blood flow to tight, painful areas.

😴

Deep, Restorative Sleep

Relaxed muscles and a calmer mind make it easier to fall into deep, restful sleep.

⚡

Restored Energy & Mobility

As stiffness eases, many people feel lighter, more mobile and well rested after their sessions.

Vishrama or a Targeted Therapy?

Vishrama is our full-body Ayurvedic treatment for body pain. If your pain is mostly in one area, your doctor may suggest a focused therapy instead of, or along with, Vishrama:

Everyday Habits for Body Pain Relief

Small daily habits help your Ayurvedic treatment for body pain work better and last longer:

  • Oil your joints. A warm sesame oil self-massage before a bath, a few times a week, is a classic Ayurvedic habit for stiffness.
  • Keep warm. Avoid cold drafts and air-conditioning blowing directly on your back or neck.
  • Move every hour. If you sit for long, stand up, stretch and walk for a few minutes each hour.
  • Eat warm, cooked food. Warm meals and warm water are easier to digest and are traditionally recommended to settle Vata.
  • Sleep on time. A regular bedtime gives the body time to recover.
  • Try gentle yoga. Simple stretches for the back and neck help, but avoid anything that increases your pain.

After Your Vishrama Session

A little care after the session helps you get the most from your Ayurvedic treatment for body pain:

  • Rest for the remainder of the day and avoid heavy lifting or intense exercise.
  • Avoid cold drinks, cold water baths and cold air for the rest of the day.
  • Have a light, warm meal and sip warm water.
  • Follow the posture and movement advice your doctor gives you until your next visit.

How Many Sessions of Ayurvedic Treatment for Body Pain Do You Need?

Many people feel lighter and less stiff after their first Vishrama session. For long-standing pain, our doctors usually suggest a course of 7–14 sessions over 3–4 weeks, reviewed as you go. Some people then continue with an occasional session to maintain their comfort. Your doctor will recommend a plan based on your pain pattern and goals, and results vary from person to person. Consistency matters: an Ayurvedic treatment for body pain works best when sessions are regular and the home routine between them is followed.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Vishrama is a 2-hour HH Signature Treatment that includes Sarvanga Abhyanga (full-body oil massage), Sarvanga Podikizhi (herbal bolus therapy), and Sthanik Pichu (targeted medicated oil pad therapy). Followed by 15 minutes of steam/shower and post-treatment rest.

Vishrama is designed for everyday musculoskeletal aches, including back and neck pain. For diagnosed conditions such as spondylitis or sciatica, it can be taken alongside your prescribed care after your doctor has checked that it suits you. Sthanik Pichu focuses medicated oil on the affected area while Abhyanga and Podikizhi work on the surrounding muscles.

Sthanik Pichu involves placing a thick cotton pad soaked in warm medicated oil on the painful area — typically the lower back, spine or joints — and leaving it in place for 30–45 minutes. The warm oil is traditionally used to nourish the tissues, ease stiffness and soothe localised pain.

Many people feel some relief within 2–3 sessions. For long-standing pain, a course of 7–14 sessions over 3–4 weeks is usually recommended. Our doctors will assess your condition and recommend a personalised plan.

Vishrama is priced at ₹6,000/- per session. This includes the full 2-hour treatment with three therapies, steam, shower, rest, and premium Ayurvedic medicated oils. Book a free consultation to get a personalised pain relief plan.

Please inform our team about your medical history before your session. Our therapists are trained to adapt pressure, oil selection and technique for fragile joints or post-surgical areas. For severe conditions, a consultation with our Ayurvedic doctor is needed before beginning treatment.

It is a doctor-guided treatment that uses warm medicated oils, herbal heat and gentle pressure to ease aches and stiffness, and looks at the Vata imbalance behind them. At Herbal Hills, Vishrama is our Ayurvedic treatment for body pain.

Yes, please continue the medicines your doctor has prescribed, and tell our Ayurvedic doctor about them at the consultation. Vishrama is designed to be taken alongside your prescribed care, not in place of it.

No, it should not hurt. The warm bundles are pressed rhythmically with comfortable pressure, and the therapist adjusts the heat and pressure if an area feels sensitive. Tell your therapist at any time if you feel uncomfortable.

Vishrama is available at all 5 Herbal Hills Wellness Center locations in western Mumbai: Juhu, Goregaon, Kandivali and two centres in Borivali. Book a free consultation at the centre nearest to you.
