What is Netra Tarpana?

Netra Tarpana Ayurvedic Eye Treatment at Herbal Hills Center Mumbai

Ayurvedic Medicated Ghee Eye Bath for Vision & Eye Health

Netra Tarpana is a classical Ayurvedic eye therapy where specially prepared medicated ghee (Sneha) is retained in dough rings (formed from black gram flour) placed around the eyes. "Netra" means eyes and "Tarpana" means nourishment or satiation.

The warm medicated ghee bathes the eyes for a specific duration, deeply nourishing the eye tissues, optic nerves, and surrounding structures. It is one of the most effective Ayurvedic treatments for maintaining healthy vision and addressing a wide range of eye-related disorders caused by Vata and Pitta imbalances.

The Netra Tarpana Procedure

1
Ayurvedic Consultation

Our Ayurvedic doctor assesses your eye health, dosha imbalance, and specific concerns to determine the right medicated ghee formulation and number of sessions suited to your condition.

2
Dough Ring Preparation

Rings are carefully formed from black gram (urad dal) flour dough and fitted around both eyes, creating a sealed well that holds the medicated ghee in place throughout the therapy.

3
Medicated Ghee Application

Duration: 30–45 minutes per session

Method: Warm medicated ghee poured and retained in dough rings over the eyes

Sensation: Deeply soothing and cooling — a profound relaxation of the eyes

Warm medicated ghee is slowly poured into the dough rings until the eyes are fully bathed. The patient is asked to blink gently, allowing the ghee to penetrate the conjunctiva, cornea, and deeper ocular structures. The nourishing properties of the ghee work to replenish eye tissues and calm inflamed nerves throughout the session.

4
Post-Care & Advice

After the ghee is removed and the dough rings taken off, the eyes are gently cleaned. The doctor advises on aftercare, rest, dietary recommendations, and any complementary therapies to sustain the benefits of the treatment.

Important: Netra Tarpana should always be performed under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic doctor. The choice of medicated ghee, duration, and number of sessions is determined individually based on your eye condition and dosha constitution.

Frequently Asked Questions

The type of medicated ghee (Sneha) used varies according to your specific eye condition and dosha imbalance. Common preparations include Triphala Ghrita, Mahatriphala Ghrita, and other classical formulations. Your Ayurvedic doctor will prescribe the most appropriate ghee after a thorough consultation.
Netra Tarpana is generally very safe when performed by a trained Ayurvedic therapist under medical supervision. It is particularly beneficial for dry eyes, digital eye strain, refractive errors, and early degenerative eye conditions. However, it should be avoided during active eye infections, conjunctivitis, or after recent eye surgery. A consultation with our Ayurvedic doctor will confirm your suitability.
For general eye nourishment and preventive care, 3–7 sessions are typically recommended. For specific conditions such as dry eye syndrome, early cataracts, or optic nerve weakness, a longer structured course of 7–14 sessions may be advised. Your Ayurvedic doctor will determine the right plan after assessing your condition.
Yes, Netra Tarpana is highly effective for relieving digital eye strain — one of the most common modern eye complaints caused by prolonged screen use. The medicated ghee deeply nourishes the dry, strained tissues, reduces burning and redness, and provides profound relaxation to the eyes. Regular sessions are beneficial for those with screen-intensive work.
Contact lenses must be removed before Netra Tarpana. We recommend removing lenses well in advance of your appointment. Spectacle wearers can keep their glasses off during the treatment. Our team will guide you on all pre-treatment instructions during your consultation.
