What is Vaman?

Vaman Ayurvedic Panchakarma Treatment at Herbal Hills Center Mumbai

Ayurvedic Therapeutic Emesis for Deep Kapha Purification

Vaman is the first and most important of the five classical Panchakarma therapies. It involves medically supervised therapeutic emesis (controlled vomiting) induced by administering specific herbal preparations — to eliminate accumulated Kapha, toxins (Ama), and vitiated doshas from the upper body, stomach, and respiratory tract.

Vaman is not an ordinary procedure — it is a carefully designed 15-day programme that includes preparatory therapies (Purvakarma), the main treatment day, and a post-procedure recovery plan (Paschatkarma). It is performed exclusively by our Ayurvedic doctors and delivers profound, lasting purification that is often life-changing for patients with chronic Kapha disorders.

The Vaman Programme

1
Ayurvedic Consultation & Assessment

Our Ayurvedic doctor conducts a thorough evaluation of your health condition, Kapha imbalance, digestive strength, and overall fitness to confirm suitability for Vaman and design your personalised programme.

2
Pre-Therapy Procedure (Purvakarma)

i. Snehapan: For 3–6 days, the patient drinks ghee on an empty stomach every morning. The dose increases from 30 ml to 180 ml over these days.

ii. Snehan & Swedan: Oil massage (Abhyanga) and herbal steam (Swedan) are carried out after Snehapan, continuing till the day of Vaman — to mobilise accumulated Kapha toward the digestive tract.

3
Main Therapy — Vaman

Programme Duration: 15 days (including preparation and recovery)

Supervision: Performed exclusively by our Ayurvedic doctor

i. Medicinal Kadha, Milk, or Sugarcane juice is given to fill the stomach fully.

ii. After drinking the above liquids, the patient is asked to consume Vaman medicine to induce vomiting.

iii. Once symptoms of nausea, sweating, and goosebumps appear, the patient drinks Kadha as much as possible.

iv. When the patient naturally feels to vomit, vomiting is allowed to continue until a yellowish liquid is seen.

v. The patient is then exposed to medicated fumes to drain out accumulated Kapha from the mouth, chest, and sinus area.

4
Post-Therapy — Sansarjan Kram

After Vaman, digestion is weak for a few days. To restore digestive strength, the patient follows a special diet regimen called Sansarjan Kram.

i. Diet includes light, easily digestible foods such as moong dal, rice, etc.

ii. Along with food, the patient consumes digestive powder provided by us to support recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — when performed by a qualified Ayurvedic doctor following the classical Panchakarma protocol. Vaman at Herbal Hills Center is performed exclusively by our doctors, not therapists. The preparation phase, main procedure, and recovery are all carefully monitored. A thorough health assessment is conducted before the programme begins to confirm suitability.
Asthma and chronic respiratory disorders are primarily caused by excess Kapha accumulation in the lungs and respiratory tract. Vaman directly eliminates this excess Kapha through the upward route — clearing the airways, reducing mucus accumulation, and providing lasting relief that is often not achievable with symptomatic treatments alone.
The complete Vaman Panchakarma programme is 15 days — comprising the preparatory phase (Purvakarma), the main treatment day, and the post-procedure recovery (Paschatkarma). This structured timeline is essential to ensure the procedure is safe, effective, and delivers lasting benefits.
Specific dietary guidelines are provided at every stage of the programme. During preparation, a Kapha-aggravating diet may be followed. After the main procedure, a progressive dietary protocol (Samsarjana Krama) — starting from light liquid foods and gradually progressing to a normal diet — is followed to restore digestive strength safely.
Vaman is contraindicated for children, the elderly, pregnant women, people with severe debility, cardiac conditions, hypertension, or bleeding disorders. A comprehensive Ayurvedic consultation is mandatory before beginning the programme to confirm suitability and ensure the procedure is conducted safely.
