What is Pristha Basti?

Pristha Basti Ayurvedic Back Treatment at Herbal Hills Center Mumbai

Ayurvedic Spinal Oil Bath for Back Pain & Spine Health

Pristha (Spinal Cord) + Basti (Oil Retaining). A large dough ring is placed along the entire spine — neck to lumbar — and filled with warm medicated oil retained for a therapeutic duration.

The oil's warmth and herbal properties penetrate deep into the spinal muscles and tissues — relaxing stiffness, reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and nourishing the nervous system.

In Ayurveda, back pain is linked to aggravated Vata dosha and reduced tissue nourishment. Pristha Basti directly addresses both at the root level.

The Pristha Basti Procedure

1
Ayurvedic Consultation

Our Ayurvedic doctor assesses your back condition, pain severity, spinal history, and dosha balance to select the appropriate medicated oil and customise the treatment duration.

2
Full Back Oil Massage

The entire back is gently massaged with warm medicated oil to prepare the muscles and spinal tissues, enhance local circulation, and improve absorption for the main procedure.

3
Dough Ring Placement

A large ring made of black gram dough is shaped and placed along the entire spine — from the cervical (neck) region to the lumbar (lower back) area — forming a leak-proof well over the full length of the spine.

4
Warm Oil Retention

Duration: 45 minutes per session

Method: Warm medicated oil poured and retained in the dough well along the entire spine

Sensation: Deep, spreading warmth along the back — profoundly relaxing

Warm medicated oil is poured into the well and retained over the spine. As the oil cools, it is replaced using cotton gauze and fresh warm oil — maintaining a steady therapeutic temperature throughout the session.

5
Removal & Post-Care

The dough ring is removed at the end of the procedure and the back is lightly massaged to enhance absorption. The doctor advises on aftercare, posture guidance, and any follow-up sessions needed.
