What Is an Ayurvedic Foot Massage?
In Ayurveda, the foot massage is called Padabhyanga, from pada (foot) and abhyanga (oil massage). The classical texts list it as part of dinacharya, the healthy daily routine, and describe it as a way to keep the feet strong and supple, calm the mind and support restful sleep. The feet carry several marma points, sensitive junctions of muscles, joints and nerves, which is why an ayurvedic foot massage is so relaxing for the whole body and not just the feet.
In simple terms, an ayurvedic foot massage uses warm medicated oil, applied with slow, rhythmic strokes over the soles, heels, ankles and lower legs. The oil is chosen for your constitution, and the pressure is adjusted to what feels comfortable. The aim of an ayurvedic foot massage is to ease fatigue, nourish dry skin and joints, and bring a feeling of lightness and calm.
Our Padabhyanga signature treatment takes this simple daily practice further. Instead of a single foot massage, it combines four lower-body therapies in one session, so the feet, legs and knees are cared for together. Every plan starts with a doctor consultation, so the ayurvedic foot massage you receive is matched to your feet, joints and routine.
Why Feet and Legs Get Tired: The Ayurvedic View of Vata
Ayurveda links tired feet, aching calves and stiff knees mainly to Vata, the dosha of air and movement. Vata naturally settles in the lower body, and it increases with long hours of standing or sitting, travel, irregular meals, poor sleep, cold weather and age.
- Dryness. Rough heels, cracked skin and joints that feel stiff or creak on movement.
- Fatigue. Heavy, tired legs at the end of the day, especially after standing or walking for hours.
- Restlessness. Difficulty switching off at night, light sleep and a busy mind.
Modern routines make this more common than ever. Long commutes, hours at a desk, standing shifts and late nights all keep Vata high, and the feet and legs are often the first place where it shows.
Warm oil is the classical answer to Vata, because it brings warmth, moisture and steadiness. That is why an ayurvedic foot massage is often the first thing an Ayurvedic doctor recommends for tired feet and restless sleep, and why Padabhyanga adds oil-based knee and leg therapies around it.

Therapies Used in Padabhyanga
Each of these four therapies plays a different role, and together they turn a simple ayurvedic foot massage into complete care for the feet, legs and knees.
Janu Basti
A specialised Ayurvedic knee therapy — a dough dam filled with warm medicated oil is placed over the knee joint. Helps ease knee pain and stiffness, nourishes and lubricates the joint, and supports flexibility in stiff knees.
Ardhanga Abhyanga
A focused warm oil massage on the lower half of the body — thighs, calves, and legs. Improves blood circulation, reduces heaviness, eases leg discomfort, and deeply nourishes tired leg muscles.
Padabhyanga
The signature Ayurvedic foot massage — warm medicated oil is rhythmically massaged into the feet, soles, and ankles. Activates marma (vital energy) points, reduces foot fatigue, and grounds the entire nervous system.
Ekanga Podikizhi
A targeted bolus therapy on the legs and feet using warm herbal powder bundles. Opens channels, helps reduce swelling and stiffness, eases localised pain, and restores lightness to heavy, fatigued lower limbs.
Your Padabhyanga Session: Ayurvedic Foot Massage, Step by Step
Here is what a typical Padabhyanga ayurvedic foot massage session looks like at our Mumbai centres. The exact plan is always set by your doctor.
1. Free doctor consultation
Your doctor asks about your feet, knees and legs, how long you stand or sit each day, your sleep, and any condition or medicines you have, such as diabetes, blood pressure or varicose veins. The doctor may check your pulse (Nadi Parikshan) before deciding whether Padabhyanga is right for you.
2. Janu Basti
You lie down comfortably while a ring of dough is placed around each knee and filled with warm medicated oil, which is kept warm for the length of the therapy.
3. Ardhanga Abhyanga and Padabhyanga
The therapist massages warm oil into the thighs, calves and legs, then moves to the feet for the signature ayurvedic foot massage, working slowly over the soles, heels and ankles.
4. Ekanga Podikizhi
Warm herbal powder bundles are pressed and rubbed gently over the legs and feet to finish the therapy.
5. Steam, shower and rest (about 30 minutes)
You then have 15 minutes of steam and shower, followed by 15 minutes of rest, and simple advice to take home.

When Padabhyanga May Not Be Suitable
Padabhyanga is generally well tolerated, but your doctor may postpone or adjust the ayurvedic foot massage if you have:
- An open wound, ulcer, infection or fresh injury on the feet or legs
- A fever or acute illness on the day
- Deep vein thrombosis, or sudden swelling, redness or pain in one leg
- A recent fracture, sprain or surgery on the legs or knees
- Pregnancy, or a known sensitivity to any of the oils or herbs used
If you have diabetes, reduced sensation in the feet or poor circulation, please tell your doctor before the session so the oil, warmth and pressure can be adjusted. Padabhyanga is designed to be taken alongside your prescribed care, not in place of it.

Simple Foot Care Tips at Home
A short home routine helps you keep the benefits of your ayurvedic foot massage between visits:
- Oil your feet at bedtime. Warm a little of the oil your doctor recommends and massage your soles and heels for five minutes before sleep.
- Soak tired feet. A lukewarm water soak for ten minutes after a long day eases heaviness. Dry your feet well afterwards, especially between the toes.
- Wear supportive footwear. Choose cushioned, well-fitting shoes, and avoid standing in one place for too long.
- Move your legs. Short walks, ankle circles and gentle stretches through the day support circulation.
- Keep warm. Avoid walking barefoot on cold floors and sitting directly under an air conditioner.
- Rest with your legs raised. Lying down with your feet slightly raised for a few minutes helps tired, swollen legs.
After Your Padabhyanga Session
A little care after the session helps you get the most from your ayurvedic foot massage:
- Walk carefully at first, as the soles may still be a little oily.
- Wear socks or closed footwear and avoid cold floors and cold water for the rest of the day.
- Keep the evening light and restful, and try to sleep on time.
- Follow the oiling and routine advice your doctor gives you until your next visit.
How Many Ayurvedic Foot Massage Sessions Do You Need?
For tired feet and general relaxation, many people book a single session and repeat it whenever they need to. For stiff knees, heavy legs or dry, cracked heels, our doctors usually suggest a short course of sessions spread over a few weeks, reviewed at each visit. Your doctor will recommend a plan based on your feet, joints and goals, and results vary from person to person. An ayurvedic foot massage works best when the sessions are regular and the simple home routine between them is followed. Many people who stand at work, travel often or sleep lightly choose to make Padabhyanga a regular part of their self-care, for example once a month or at the change of seasons, when Vata tends to rise. Your doctor can help you plan a rhythm that fits your routine, your budget and your goals.
