Constipation Treatment in Ayurveda

Constipation (Vibandha) is a Vata disorder in Ayurveda. Treatment focuses on pacifying aggravated Apana Vata, cleansing accumulated Ama from the colon, and restoring the natural downward movement of the digestive system.

Our Approach: At Herbal Hills Ayurvedic Wellness Center, our doctors begin every consultation with Nadi Parikshan (pulse diagnosis). This identifies the nature of the Vata imbalance, the state of your Purishavaha Srotas (eliminatory channels), and the extent of Ama — enabling a completely personalised treatment plan for your digestive health.

Understanding Constipation in Ayurveda

Ayurveda describes constipation as Vibandha — caused primarily by the aggravation of Apana Vata, the downward-moving energy responsible for elimination. When Apana Vata is disturbed, the colon loses its natural peristaltic movement, resulting in dry, hard stools, infrequent bowel movements, and a buildup of Ama (digestive toxins).

Ayurvedic treatment goes beyond laxatives — it aims to restore the proper function of Apana Vata, nourish and lubricate the colon, eliminate accumulated Ama, and re-establish healthy, regular elimination naturally.

Anuvasan Basti Medicated Oil Enema

Niruha Basti Decoction Medicated Enema
Therapy 02
Niruha Basti
Medicated Enema
Decoction-based medicated enema combining herbal kashayam with oils to deeply cleanse the colon, eliminate Ama, correct Vata imbalance, and re-establish healthy peristaltic function throughout the large intestine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ayurveda addresses constipation at its root — aggravated Apana Vata, Ama accumulation, and weak Agni — rather than just providing temporary laxative relief. With the right combination of Basti therapies, herbal medicines, dietary modifications, and lifestyle changes, most patients achieve regular, natural bowel function. Consistency with the prescribed plan is key to lasting results.
Anuvasan Basti uses medicated oil as its primary ingredient — it nourishes, lubricates, and pacifies Vata in the colon. It is gentler and is often retained for a longer period. Niruha Basti uses a medicated herbal decoction combined with oils — it has a more cleansing, detoxifying action and is more effective for eliminating Ama. Both are classical Panchakarma procedures administered under medical supervision. Often, both are used in sequence as part of a Basti Krama (course of Bastis).
Yes. Basti is considered one of the safest and most effective Panchakarma procedures and is described in Ayurveda as the "king of treatments" for Vata disorders. It is performed by trained therapists under the supervision of our Ayurvedic doctors. Suitability and the appropriate type of Basti are determined after your consultation and Nadi Parikshan.
For mild to moderate constipation, significant improvement is typically seen within 5–7 sessions. For chronic constipation, a structured Basti Krama of 8–16 sessions (alternating Anuvasan and Niruha Basti) is commonly recommended. Your doctor will prescribe the right course after assessing your condition.
