What is Thalam?

Thalam Ayurvedic Head Paste Treatment at Herbal Hills Center Mumbai

Ayurvedic Medicated Paste Therapy for the Head

Thalam is a classical Ayurvedic therapy where a specially prepared medicated paste — made from herbal powders mixed with medicated oil or buttermilk — is applied to the crown of the head (Brahmarandra) and retained for a set duration. A cloth band is tied around the forehead to keep the paste in place.

The herbal paste acts directly on the scalp and the key marma point at the crown, deeply cooling excess Pitta, calming Vata, nourishing the scalp and hair roots, and inducing profound mental relaxation. It is particularly effective for stress, headaches, insomnia, hair fall, and premature greying.

The Thalam Procedure

1
Ayurvedic Consultation

Our Ayurvedic doctor assesses your dosha constitution, scalp condition, hair concerns, and mental health to select the appropriate herbal paste formulation for your Thalam session.

2
Paste Preparation & Application

Duration: 30 minutes per session

Method: Medicated herbal paste applied to the crown of the head and retained

Sensation: Cooling, soothing — deeply calming for the mind and scalp

A medicated paste made from selected Ayurvedic herbal powders mixed with oil or buttermilk is freshly prepared and applied to the crown of the head. A cloth band is tied around the forehead to retain the paste in place throughout the session. The herbal paste works on the scalp and crown marma point — cooling, nourishing, and calming from within.

3
Removal & Post-Care

After the retention period, the paste is gently removed. The doctor advises on aftercare, when to wash the hair, dietary recommendations, and follow-up session scheduling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shirodhara involves a continuous stream of warm medicated oil poured over the forehead, while Thalam involves applying a medicated herbal paste to the crown of the head and retaining it. Thalam is more targeted for scalp nourishment, hair care, and cooling excess head heat — especially effective for hair fall, premature greying, and Pitta-related head conditions.
Yes. Thalam is one of the most effective Ayurvedic scalp treatments for hair fall and premature greying. The herbal paste deeply nourishes the hair roots, reduces scalp inflammation and dryness, and cools excess Pitta — which is the primary Ayurvedic cause of both hair fall and early greying.
For hair concerns, a course of 7–14 sessions is typically recommended. For stress and sleep disorders, improvement is often felt within 3–5 sessions. Your Ayurvedic doctor will advise the right frequency and duration based on your specific condition and goals.
The herbal paste formulation varies based on your condition and dosha. Common ingredients include Bhringraj, Amalaki, Brahmi, and Neem for hair and scalp conditions, or cooling herbs like Chandana (sandalwood) and Jatamansi for Pitta-related stress and head heat. Your Ayurvedic doctor selects the right combination after consultation.
Yes. Thalam is a completely safe, non-invasive therapy. The herbal paste creates a cooling and soothing sensation on the scalp — most patients find it very comfortable and deeply relaxing. It should be avoided in cases of active scalp infections, open wounds, or acute fever.
