What Is Netradhara?

“Netra” means eye and “Dhara” means a continuous stream. In Netra Dhara, a warm herbal liquid is poured gently over closed eyes in a steady stream. In Ayurveda it is traditionally used to soothe tired, strained eyes and to support eye comfort.

The liquid is usually a freshly prepared herbal decoction — often using Triphala, rose water and similar gentle ingredients — chosen by the doctor according to your needs. The eyes are kept closed throughout, so the liquid flows over the eyelids and the skin around the eyes.

At Herbal Hills, every Netra Dhara eye therapy session is planned by an Ayurvedic doctor after a consultation.

How Netradhara Eye Therapy Works

Ayurveda links tired, burning, heavy eyes mainly to Pitta (heat) and Vata (dryness), aggravated by long screen hours, bright light, dust, late nights and stress. A cool-to-warm, gentle stream of herbal liquid is the classical way to calm both.

Triphala — a combination of three fruits — is the herb most often used for the eyes in Ayurveda. Prepared as a decoction and filtered carefully, it gives a soft, soothing liquid. Rose water and other cooling ingredients may be added. The continuous flow, the darkness behind closed eyes and the quiet room all help the eyes and mind rest.

This is why Netra Dhara eye therapy is often described as one of the gentlest Ayurvedic eye treatments, suitable as a relaxing break for people with long working hours.

Why Screen-Heavy Days Tire the Eyes

Most people blink far less while concentrating on a screen. Add air-conditioning, bright light, small text and late nights, and the surface of the eyes dries and the focusing muscles tire. The result is familiar: burning, dryness, heaviness, watering, headaches around the forehead and a strong urge to close the eyes by evening.

Ayurveda describes this pattern as aggravated Pitta and Vata in the eyes — heat from intense focus and light, and dryness from air-conditioning and long hours. A gentle herbal stream over closed eyes is the classical way to calm both, which is why Netradhara is often the first eye therapy a doctor recommends for people with screen-heavy jobs.

How It Works

The Netradhara Procedure, Step by Step

Whichever centre you choose for your Netra Dhara eye therapy, the procedure follows the same four stages.

1

Consultation & Preparation

Our Ayurvedic doctor checks your eyes and history, then a herbal decoction (often using Triphala, rose water and similar ingredients) is freshly prepared and filtered.

2

Positioning

You lie down comfortably on the therapy bed with your eyes closed. Your face and hair are protected with soft cloths.

3

Pouring

The warm herbal liquid is gently poured over the closed eyes in a continuous stream for about 10–15 minutes.

4

Cleansing & Rest

The eyes are wiped with a soft cloth and you rest with your eyes closed for a few minutes. The doctor advises on aftercare. Your doctor will confirm the total session time.

Who Should Consult the Doctor First?

Tell your Ayurvedic doctor about any of the following before the session:

  • Eye infection, redness with discharge, or a stye.
  • Recent eye surgery (including LASIK or cataract surgery) or injury.
  • Contact lens use — lenses must be removed.
  • Known eye disease such as glaucoma, or sudden changes in vision.

Eye symptoms that are severe, sudden or persistent should be checked by an eye specialist. In these situations Netra Dhara may be postponed or not used.

Netradhara vs Netra Tarpan

Both are classical Ayurvedic eye therapies, but they work differently:

  • Netra Dhara (this page) — a herbal liquid is poured over closed eyes in a stream. Gentle, cooling and quick.
  • Netra Tarpan — medicated ghee is held around the open eyes inside rings of dough. More nourishing and deeper.

Your Ayurvedic doctor chooses the therapy that suits you. Many plans start with Netra Dhara and move to Netra Tarpan if deeper nourishment is needed.

Ayurvedic Eye Soothing Treatment in a Wider Plan

Netra Dhara often sits inside a wider eye-care plan:

You can explore every therapy on our Ayurvedic therapies page.

Netradhara Eye Therapy in Classical Ayurveda

Classical Ayurvedic texts describe several Kriya Kalpas — special procedures for the eyes. They include Seka or Parisheka (pouring a liquid over the closed eyes), Aschyotana (eye drops), Tarpana (holding ghee over the eyes) and Pindi or Bidalaka (herbal applications on the eyelids). Netra Dhara is the clinic form of Seka: a gentle, continuous pour.

The texts recommend Seka for eyes that feel hot, irritated or tired, and for situations where a lighter, cooling treatment is better than a heavy, nourishing one. This is why Netra Dhara eye therapy is often the first eye therapy a doctor suggests, before deeper procedures like Tarpana.

Today, the same principles apply to modern strain: long hours of focus on screens, air-conditioned rooms that dry the eyes, and late nights. Your doctor uses the classical framework to choose between Netra Dhara, Netra Tarpan and other options, and to decide how often you need them.

Who Benefits Most from Netradhara Eye Therapy?

People who book Netra Dhara eye therapy at our centres are often software professionals, designers, accountants, students and gamers who spend most of the day in front of a screen. Others work outdoors in Mumbai’s bright light and dust, or drive long distances. Many simply want a calming, 15-minute pause for tired eyes during a busy week.

Netradhara, Netra Dhara and Netra Seka: Names Explained

You may see this therapy written as Netradhara, Netra Dhara or Netradhara treatment; they are simply different ways of writing the same Sanskrit words, “netra” (eye) and “dhara” (a continuous stream). In classical texts the closely related procedure of pouring a thin stream of medicated liquid over closed eyes is called Netra Seka or Parisheka, and many Ayurvedic doctors use the names interchangeably.

Netra Prakshalana, washing the eyes with a mild herbal liquid, is a lighter cleansing procedure, while Netra Tarpan holds medicated ghee around open eyes and is the most nourishing. Your doctor chooses between them after examining your eyes, so the name matters less than the plan made for you.

What to Expect in Your First Netradhara Session

You lie comfortably on your back with a soft towel around your head, and the therapist may begin with a short, gentle massage of the forehead and temples. Your eyes stay closed throughout. The warm herbal liquid is then poured in a slow, steady stream across the closed eyelids, moving from one eye to the other, while the run-off is collected so nothing reaches your clothes.

Most people find the warmth and the gentle flow calming within a minute or two, and some drift into light sleep. After the pour, the area around the eyes is dried and you rest for a few minutes. Because Netradhara is light, most people can return to the day soon after, though a short break from screens is wise. Tell the therapist straight away if the liquid feels too warm or anything stings.

A full visit, including a short check-in with the doctor, settling in, the pour itself and a few minutes of rest, usually fits comfortably into an hour, which makes it easy to book before work or during a long lunch break.

How Many Netradhara Sessions Are Needed?

The number of sessions depends on your concern and how you respond. Some people book Netra Dhara eye therapy as an occasional relaxing session during busy periods; others follow a short course of several sessions. Your Ayurvedic doctor will advise a plan after consultation and review it as you go.

Planning Netradhara Eye Treatment Mumbai Sessions Around Work

There is no single schedule. Common plans include:

  • During demanding work periods — a few sessions over one or two weeks, for example during audits, launches or exams.
  • Regular maintenance — an occasional session as part of a monthly self-care routine.
  • With other eye therapies — Netradhara first, followed by Netra Tarpan if the doctor feels deeper nourishment is needed.

Your Ayurvedic doctor will advise a plan after consultation and adjust it as you go.

Before and After Your Netradhara Session

Before your session

  • Remove contact lenses and eye make-up.
  • Tell the doctor about any eye infection, surgery, injury or eye disease.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes on the day.

After your session

  • Keep your eyes closed and rest for a few minutes before getting up.
  • Avoid screens, bright sunlight, dust and smoke for a while afterwards; wear sunglasses outdoors.
  • Do not rub your eyes.
  • Report any redness, pain or blurred vision to the doctor straight away.

Daily Habits for Comfortable Eyes

Ayurveda places as much weight on routine as on therapy. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Following the 20-20-20 habit: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Blinking fully and often when using screens.
  • Splashing the closed eyes with cool, clean water a few times a day.
  • Sleeping on time and limiting screens before bed.
  • Eating fresh fruit, vegetables and a little ghee, and drinking enough water.
  • A gentle foot massage with oil at night, which Ayurveda links to eye comfort.

These habits help the Netra Dhara benefits last between sessions.

Is Netradhara Safe? Who Should Avoid It?

Netra Dhara is a gentle external therapy when the herbal liquid is freshly prepared, filtered and poured carefully over closed eyes by trained therapists.

It should not be done when there is an active eye infection, a fresh injury or recent eye surgery, and it is planned carefully in people with known eye disease. Netra Dhara eye therapy supports your wellbeing alongside — never instead of — care from an eye specialist.

Choosing a Netradhara Centre in Mumbai

Look for a centre where an Ayurvedic doctor checks your eyes first, where the herbal decoction is prepared fresh and filtered for every session, and where the room is clean and calm. At Herbal Hills, all five centres follow the same consultation-first standard, starting with a free Nadi Parikshan.

Ayurveda is a recognised system of medicine in India under the Ministry of AYUSH, and our doctors follow its classical principles.
