Hair Fall Treatment in Ayurveda

Medically reviewed by Dr. Yojna, BAMS · Last updated 7 October 2026

The short answer

Hair fall treatment in Ayurveda at Herbal Hills Center is a doctor-planned programme that may combine Shiro Lepam, Shirodhara, Shiro Abhyanga, Virechan and Raktamokshan, chosen after Nadi Parikshan at any of our five Mumbai centres.

Hair fall (Khalitya) in Ayurveda is rooted in aggravated Pitta, Vata imbalance, and Ama accumulation in the scalp channels. Treatment focuses on nourishing the hair roots (Kesha Mula), purifying Rakta Dhatu, and supporting scalp health from within.

Understanding the condition

Understanding Hair Fall in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, hair fall is known as Khalitya — a condition caused primarily by aggravated Pitta dosha, which damages the hair follicles (Kesha Mula) and disrupts the nourishment of Kesha (hair) from Asthi Dhatu (bone tissue). When combined with Vata aggravation, it leads to dryness, breakage, and thinning, while Kapha imbalance causes scalp congestion and dandruff-related hair loss.

Ayurvedic treatment for hair fall works on multiple levels — purifying Rakta Dhatu (blood), nourishing the scalp through medicated oils, clearing Ama from the Srotas, reducing systemic Pitta, and supporting Ojas — looking at the underlying imbalance, not only the symptoms.

Our approach: At Herbal Hills Ayurvedic Wellness Center, our doctors begin every consultation with Nadi Parikshan (pulse diagnosis). This identifies the dominant dosha imbalance, the state of the scalp channels (Keshavaha Srotas), and the quality of Rakta Dhatu — ensuring a personalised hair fall treatment plan tailored to your constitution.

Common Symptoms

  • Excessive hair fall & thinning
  • Inflamed or sensitive scalp
  • Dandruff & scalp dryness
  • Premature greying of hair
  • Oily scalp with clogged follicles
  • Hair breakage & split ends
  • Receding hairline or bald patches
  • Fatigue & stress-related hair loss

Ayurvedic Causes of Hair Fall

  • Aggravated Pitta dosha burning the hair roots (Kesha Mula)
  • Vitiated Rakta Dhatu (blood) failing to nourish the scalp and follicles
  • Accumulation of Ama (toxins) blocking Keshavaha Srotas (scalp channels)
  • Excess stress, anger, and emotional strain aggravating Pitta and Vata
  • Improper diet — spicy, oily, or Pitta-aggravating foods
  • Hormonal imbalances affecting Dhatu nourishment
  • Weak Ojas (immunity) and poor digestive fire (Mandagni)

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about hair fall

Ayurveda looks at hair fall (Khalitya) through Pitta, Rakta Dhatu and the health of the scalp. Therapies, diet and lifestyle guidance from our doctors may help support the scalp and hair roots. Results differ from person to person and depend on consistency with the plan.

Nadi Parikshan is Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis — our doctor reads the pulse to identify your Prakriti (body constitution), the dominant dosha driving your hair fall (Pitta, Vata, or Kapha), and the quality of your Rakta Dhatu. This ensures your hair fall treatment is entirely personalised — not a generic protocol applied to everyone.

Shirodhara involves a continuous, rhythmic stream of warm medicated oil poured over the scalp and forehead. It is used in Ayurveda to calm the nervous system, which is linked with stress-related hair loss, and to care for the scalp. The doctor decides whether it suits you.

Virechan is medicated therapeutic purgation — a Panchakarma procedure used in Ayurveda to help clear excess Pitta dosha and Ama from the digestive tract and blood. Since Pitta is regarded as the main driver of hair fall in Ayurveda, it may be considered for Pitta-related hair fall. It is performed under strict medical supervision after preparatory procedures, and it is not suitable for everyone.

Results vary based on the severity, how long the problem has lasted, and its cause. Hair cycles are slow, so any change usually takes a few months. Our doctors will give you a realistic timeline after your individual assessment and guide you through the full plan.

No single medicine suits everyone. Hair fall can follow stress, digestion problems, hormonal change, nutrition gaps or scalp conditions, so the Ayurvedic doctor prescribes after consultation and Nadi Parikshan, along with scalp therapies such as Shiro Abhyanga or Shirodhara. Get thyroid and iron levels checked if hair fall is sudden or heavy.

Some people are advised herbal tablets as part of a plan. Results vary and take months. Tablets work best together with scalp therapies, diet and sleep changes, and should be taken on your doctor’s advice.

Losing about 50 to 100 hairs a day is usually considered normal. See a doctor if you notice thinning patches, sudden heavy shedding or hair fall that continues for several weeks.
