Acidity Treatment in Ayurveda

Medically reviewed by Dr. Yojna, BAMS · Last updated 7 October 2026

The short answer

Acidity treatment in Ayurveda, known as Amlapitta management, is a doctor-planned programme that may combine Virechan, Basti and Sarvanga Abhyanga with diet and lifestyle guidance. Herbal Hills Center offers it after a Nadi Parikshan consultation at five centres in Mumbai.

Hyperacidity (Amlapitta) is a Pitta disorder at its core. Ayurveda approaches acidity not just by managing symptoms but by looking at the underlying imbalance — supporting digestive fire and clearing accumulated Ama.

Understanding the condition

Understanding Acidity in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, acidity is known as Amlapitta — a condition caused by the aggravation of Pitta dosha in the stomach and digestive tract. Pitta, the fire element, when vitiated produces excess acid, leading to burning sensations, indigestion, and discomfort.

Unlike conventional approaches that only suppress acid, Ayurveda aims to pacify the aggravated Pitta, support digestive fire (Agni), and help clear the toxic buildup (Ama) that disrupts healthy digestion — helping support digestive comfort.

Our approach: At Herbal Hills Ayurvedic Wellness Center, our doctors begin every consultation with Nadi Parikshan (pulse diagnosis). This allows us to understand your individual constitution and the root cause of your acidity before recommending a personalised treatment plan.

Common Symptoms

  • Burning sensation in chest & throat
  • Nausea & sour belching
  • Bloating & heaviness after meals
  • Acid reflux & regurgitation
  • Headache & irritability
  • Loss of appetite & fatigue
  • Excessive thirst & bitter taste
  • Disturbed sleep due to discomfort

Ayurvedic Causes of Acidity

  • Irregular eating habits and skipping meals
  • Excess consumption of spicy, oily, and fermented foods
  • Chronic stress and suppressed emotions (Pitta aggravation)
  • Excessive tea, coffee, and alcohol intake
  • Sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity
  • Overuse of NSAIDs and antacids
  • Accumulation of Ama (digestive toxins) weakening Agni

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about acidity

Ayurveda looks at acidity through the balance of Pitta and the strength of digestion (Agni), rather than only suppressing symptoms. A plan that may combine Panchakarma therapies, herbal medicines, and diet and lifestyle changes guided by our doctors can help support digestive comfort. Results differ from person to person, and Ayurvedic care runs alongside, not instead of, your physician’s treatment.

Nadi Parikshan is Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis — a precise technique where our doctor reads the pulse at the wrist to assess your Prakriti (body constitution), current dosha imbalances, and the state of your digestive fire. This ensures every therapy and herbal prescription is tailored to you individually.

Antacids neutralise stomach acid temporarily but do not address the underlying imbalance. Ayurvedic treatment helps balance Pitta dosha, supports Agni, helps clear Ama, and rebalances the entire digestive system to support digestion over time.

No. Please do not stop any ongoing medications without consulting your physician. Our Ayurvedic doctors are experienced in working alongside conventional treatments and will design a plan that is safe and compatible with your current medications.

Amlapitta is the Ayurvedic term for conditions with excess acidity, such as sour belching, burning in the chest or throat, nausea and heaviness after meals. It is linked in Ayurveda with aggravated Pitta and weak digestion (Agni). Your Ayurvedic doctor confirms the pattern through consultation and Nadi Parikshan.

Acidity is the everyday word for burning or sourness from excess stomach acid. Acid reflux means stomach contents flowing back into the food pipe, and hyperacidity means the stomach makes too much acid. In Ayurveda these are usually assessed together as Amlapitta. If you have chest pain, repeated vomiting, black stools or difficulty swallowing, see a physician promptly.

Ayurvedic medicines for acid reflux are prescribed by the doctor after consultation, together with therapies and diet advice, because the right choice depends on your dosha and symptoms. Please do not start or stop medicines on your own.

Your doctor gives diet advice to suit your constitution. In general, very spicy, sour, fried and fermented foods, and irregular meal times, are commonly advised against in Amlapitta.

Medical note. This page gives general information about Ayurvedic care. It is not a substitute for a doctor’s diagnosis or advice, and results are different for every person. Ayurvedic care is offered alongside, not instead of, the medicines your physician has prescribed. Please do not stop a prescribed medicine without asking the doctor who prescribed it.
