What is Nasya?

Nasya Ayurvedic Nasal Therapy at Herbal Hills Center Mumbai

Ayurvedic Nasal Therapy for Head, Sinus & Sensory Health

Nasya is one of the five classical Panchakarma therapies in Ayurveda. Medicated oils, herbal juices, or powders are administered through the nostrils to cleanse and nourish the nasal passages, sinuses, and the entire region above the shoulders — known as the Urdhwa Jatru (upper body).

The nose is considered the gateway to the head in Ayurveda. Nasya clears accumulated Kapha from the head and neck region, relieves congestion, improves clarity of the sensory organs, and supports conditions ranging from sinusitis and migraines to hair fall and neurological disorders.

The Nasya Procedure

1
Ayurvedic Consultation

Our Ayurvedic doctor evaluates your condition, dosha imbalance, and specific head or sinus complaints to select the right type of Nasya and the appropriate medicated oil or preparation.

2
Face & Neck Preparation

A gentle warm oil massage and mild steam fomentation (Swedan) is applied to the face, forehead, and neck region to relax the tissues, open the channels, and prepare the nasal passages for the therapy.

3
Nasya Administration

Duration: 30 minutes per session

Method: Medicated oil or herbal preparation instilled into each nostril

Position: Patient lies on the back with the neck gently tilted

The patient lies comfortably with the head tilted back. Warm medicated oil is instilled drop by drop into each nostril using a special Nasya instrument. The preparation travels through the nasal passages into the sinuses and upper respiratory tract, cleansing and nourishing the entire head region.

4
Post-Care & Rest

After administration, the patient rests briefly while the medicine works. The doctor provides aftercare instructions including dietary guidelines, activity restrictions for the day, and follow-up session recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are several types of Nasya based on the preparation used and the therapeutic goal — including Snehana Nasya (medicated oil), Shodhana Nasya (cleansing), Shamana Nasya (palliative), and Brinhana Nasya (nourishing). Your Ayurvedic doctor will select the right type based on your specific condition and dosha.
Yes. Nasya is one of the most effective Ayurvedic therapies for chronic sinusitis, nasal congestion, and recurring headaches. The medicated preparation clears accumulated Kapha from the sinus passages, reduces inflammation, and provides lasting relief — often where conventional treatments have limited results.
Yes. Nasya nourishes the scalp and hair roots through the nasal route, which directly connects to the head region in Ayurvedic anatomy. It is commonly recommended as part of a hair fall treatment plan, especially when the cause is linked to Vata-Pitta imbalance or stress.
A typical Nasya course runs for 7 days (Saptaha Nasya) as part of a Panchakarma programme, or can be administered on alternate days for chronic conditions. The exact number of sessions will be determined by your Ayurvedic doctor based on your condition and response to therapy.
Yes. When performed by a trained Ayurvedic therapist, Nasya is a safe and well-tolerated procedure. Most patients feel a mild sensation as the oil enters the nasal passages, followed by a sense of lightness and clarity in the head. It should not be performed on people with acute fever, pregnancy, or nasal bleeding.
